The Alliance Defense Fund, an Arizona-based Christian legal group, is looking for a fight.

It is has talked Christian ministers from 22 states to use their pulpits Sunday to deliver political sermons or endorse presidential candidates. Its goal is to take a test case to the US Supreme Court to overturn the 54 year old ban on churches and other tax exempt groups from getting directly involved in politics or endorsing specific candidates.

It seems that 5th grade students were trotted outside their schools and given copies of the New Testament by members of Gideons International, and evangelical society known for handing out Bibles as part of their missionary work. When the ACLU got involved, some people took the opportunity to attack them.

Yes, boys and girls, Zell says that if mommies hadn’t been selfish and killed their babies then we wouldn’t have any problems today. Well at least he didn’t use the standard “its President Clinton’s fault” we hear from the right so much.

The panel tonight included an actual atheist from the US, Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheist. The other members were Rachel Maddow of Air America and Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, a conservative minister who once referred to blacks stranded in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as “welfare-pampered,” “lazy” and “immoral.”

Karen Hunter and Debbie Schlussel’s comments were just plain factually wrong. Schlussel has an article on her website where she claims atheists are the next terrorists. It was like having members of the KKK complaining about civil rights. It was simply disgusting.

I got to meet him in person at the American Humanist Assocation conference when it was in Columbus in 1999 and then again when I went to the 2001 Conference in Los Angeles. Very tall guy and loud. That answered the reason he stuck with his lawsuit for 17 years when someone of a lesser constitution would have given up.
